Rachcoff Vella Architecture, created in 2007 when Directors Tony Vella and Stephen Rachcoff merged their successful, individual practices, was appointed to design a new property in semi-rural Victoria, originally referred to as ‘Ballarat House’. As a company, Rachcoff Vella focuses on delivering high quality, distinctive designs that challenge. Their great care taken to create innovative and contemporary design solutions is often reflected in the enjoyment of end users and the long term value of their built products.
Design BriefFor the Ballarat House, the architectural design brief was open with the only requirement being the size and a desire for ‘something different'. Rachoff Vella set out to create just that, with a contemporary five bedroom, architect-designed home set on ten acres in the heart of semi-rural Ballarat. With sweeping curves, the property was designed to work with the contours of the surrounding landscape and prominently featured spotted gum timber to create a beautiful harmony with the natural surrounds. The entry door was designed as a subtle continuation of an internal timber pod that exists inside the entrance. At almost three metres long, the centrally pivoting entry door creates a seamless transition when entering the home. Rather than being an obvious statement, the door stands out by pairing visual subtly with surprising size and function. The door hardware needed to continue and complement this design theme. |
Customised Door Hardware SolutionInstead of using an off the shelf handle, and by focusing on the width of the entry door, Designer Doorware recommended a custom designed handle to run horizontally across the centre of the door to provide a balancing effect. We conducted extensive consultation, research and design to develop a solution that worked critically within the styling criteria. Subtle yet striking, at two metres long and made of steel, Designer Doorware’s box flush pull handle perfectly balances form and function. In line with the theme of seamless transition, the box flush pull handle was designed to sit flush into the timber finished door. Furthermore, a row of in-built LED lights were able to be wired into the pull handle for night-time visibility and to illuminate the beautiful wide design of the door. A lock and door bell was subtly incorporated to contribute to a minimalist look that was still incredibly functional. We worked within strict size limitations to ensure the pull handle would fit the internal door structure with an enhanced depth to provide plenty of grip. The location of the cylinder escutcheon had to be exacting and carefully matched to the ML60 residential lock. The accuracy of design and manufacturing was paramount to ensure the handle and lock fitted and worked perfectly, while bronze-toned powder coat was the perfect finish to complement the timber and create a timeless, warm feel. Designer Doorware also provided other architectural hardware.
