The St. Regis New York is one of the city's most cherished addresses. Located in the heart of Manhattan it opened its doors for the first time in September 1904. Located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Fifty-Fifth Street, a refined atmosphere and gracious service rankThe St. Regis New York among the top hotels in the world.
Magnificent guest rooms and suites of seamlessly blended classic and contemporary design comprise silk wall coverings, custom-made furnishings, deeply carved crown mouldings and wainscoting. The hotel has always had a number of permanent residents, as well as transient guests. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the artist Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala famously lived at the hotel every autumn and winter, as did Marlene Dietrich.
An iconic landmark, the hotel has been undergoing a major face-lift since January, 2013 overseen by Stonehill & Taylor architects. Changes include a new restaurant, refurbished suites, redecorated guest rooms, a renovated lobby, expanded spa, and new gym on the 19th floor. The work is being done in stages, with the lobby, spa and gym upgrades to be completed this year, and suite and guest room upgrades already complete.
Designer Doorware was approached by Hunter Roberts Construction Group to be a part of the $90 million renovation which reveals dramatically redesigned guest rooms and suites. Vital to refurbishment was the preservation of the hotel’s heritage, integrity and essence. Stonehill & Taylor sought to incorporate elements from the original French Beaux-Arts style hotel, as designed by Trowbridge & Livingston by commissioning a custom designed lever and rose inspired by the original hotel fittings.
Under instruction - Designer Doorware took the original Louis XV lever and used 3D scanning and reverse engineering technology to create an exact replica, including the St Regis insignia. Produced from solid brass, eight hundred matching customised roses were designed in-house and included the signature St Regis feathers stamped on the perimeter of the rose. Designer Doorware then worked with Saflok to ensure the lever operated seamlessly with one of the most advanced and modern hotel entry locking systems.
The door handle and rose were finished in lacquered polished brass, a timeless finish giving a rich, glossy, honey coloured appearance with a clear lacquer to prevent tarnishing and maintain the opulent brass colour. The custom handle enhances the classic yet contemporary redesign for the new interiors of The St. Regis New York.
